Weather Balloon
A privacy-first, simplicity-first weather app. One screen with current conditions, the next 24 hours, and the next 7 days.
- Two permissions, and location is optional
- Coordinates rounded to ~1 km before leaving the device
- No Play Services, no analytics, no third-party SDKs
Named for the weather balloon, the humble instrument that collects the raw data behind a forecast and reports back, nothing more.
Privacy
- Weather and place search come from Open-Meteo, which needs no key or account and does no tracking.
- The US radar card shows NOAA NEXRAD imagery from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet, fetched only while the card is open. Tile requests carry no coordinates. The base map is built into the app from public-domain data and makes no requests.
- Only two permissions:
INTERNETandACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION. Location is optional. You can pin a place by search and revoke location entirely. - Coordinates are rounded to ~1 km before any request leaves the device.
- Networking is plain
HttpURLConnection. The last good forecast is cached locally, so the app works offline.
